The repurposing of dead companies
Posted on April 28, 2009
Several box box brands are trying to make a comeback, it seems. They may not be brick & mortar, but looks like they will be online brands only. That isn’t such a bad thing, given their brick & mortar model failed. It looks like stronger online brands or private equity organizations are trying to pick up the peices and take advantage of names such as Linens and Things, and Circuit City. To me this makes sense. Even though Circuit City, for instance, went out of business recently, their trademark and domain name were just acquired by Systemax, Inc. a direct seller of PCs and other equipment. I did a quick search on compete.com for any of the latest circuitcity.com traffic, and found that Circuit City received over 800,000 unique visitors last month. Not too shabby for a company that is no longer in business. If Systemax, Inc. can capitalize on this, they may be able to build a seven or eight figure business out of the defunct brand. An article on CNN Money has a little more on this subject… Take a look here: http://tinyurl.com/cy3tex
As an FYI, Systemax has also acquired the domain and trademarks for CompUSA, and is reopening stores and reinvigorating the brand as we speak.

John Jantsch on the recession and opportunity
Posted on February 3, 2009
I was reading some older blog posts over at American Express OPEN forums this morning. John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing ad a few words to say regarding a recession and how you should look at it as an opportunity rather than just an economic downturn. He said there is a silver lining to restructure your business, in so many words. I say, there is not only the opportunity to restructure it, but to review and retire old procedures that may be costing you money you do not even know is going out the window.
Check out John’s Blog post here: http://tinyurl.com/d9cb2l
I hope you enjoy it. It is short and to the point.
You should be marketing more in a down economy, not less…

I read an article last evening that thought summed it up rather nicely. My friends who are marketers, talk about this. My friends who are execs, talk about this. My friends who are consultants, talk about this. It’s an article about how companies are tightening marketing budgets instead of expanding them in hard times. When money gets tight, one of the first budgets to go is Mmarketing. Why? Well, it is seen as a cost center and not a profit center, even though its efforts help drive sales and build your brand.
